Recent Volcano Updates from the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program

January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 AVO Great Sitkin ORANGE/WATCH - Slow eruption of lava and occasional small earthquakes continue at Great Sitkin Volcano.
Jan 20, 2025 19:43 - Lava continued to erupt slowly in the summit crater of Great Sitkin Volcano. This activity was accompanied by weak seismicity, with occasional small earthquakes being detected over the past day. Webcam and satellite views of the volcano were cloudy. The current eruption of Great Sitkin Volcano began with a single explosive event in May 2021. The ongoing eruption of lava at the summit began shortly afterward, in July 2021. The volcano is monitored using local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data and web cameras, and regional infrasound and lightning networks.
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 AVO Spurr YELLOW/ADVISORY - Shallow earthquake activity continues beneath Mount Spurr.
Jan 20, 2025 19:43 - Unrest continues at Mount Spurr. The seismic network has been having problems over the past day, but shallow volcanic earthquakes were detected beneath the volcano when the network was operational. No activity was observed in satellite and webcam views. AVO continues to monitor activity at Mount Spurr for signals that would indicate that the volcano is moving closer to an eruption. Based on previous eruptions, changes from current activity in the earthquakes, ground deformation, summit lake, and fumaroles would be expected if magma began to move closer to the surface. ...
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - The eruption of Kīlauea volcano within Halemaʻumaʻu in Kaluapele (the summit caldera) paused on January 18
Jan 20, 2025 18:25 - Activity Summary: The summit eruption at Kīlauea volcano that began on December 23 ended its fourth eruptive phase around 10:10 a.m. H.S.T., January 18. Glow from the vents and the crater floor has been persistent since as breakouts and overturning crustal plates expose molten lava. This indicates that lava remains close to the surface of Halemaʻumaʻu within Kaluapele (the summit caldera). No unusual activity has been noted along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone.Summit Eruption Observations: The summit eruption at Kīlauea volcano that began ...
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 CVO Cascade Range GREEN/NORMAL - All volcanoes are at normal levels.
Jan 17, 2025 21:15 - Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background activity levels. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon.Past Week Observations: Over the past week, small earthquakes were detected at Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Newberry. All monitoring data are consistent with background levels of activity in the Cascade Range.
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 NMI Ahyi Seamount YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues; a plume of discolored water was seen on January 10.
Jan 16, 2025 23:51 - Unrest at Ahyi seamount continues. Signals from underwater volcanic activity in the direction of Ahyi were detected in hydroacoustic array data at Wake Island on January 9. A distinct plume of discolored seawater emanating from Ahyi seamount was seen in satellite images acquired January 10. Similar plumes have been observed in satellite imagery sporadically since August 5, 2024.There are no local monitoring stations near Ahyi seamount, which limits our ability to detect and characterize volcanic unrest there. We will continue to monitor satellite and distant hydroacoustic ...
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 CALVO GREEN/NORMAL - CA volcanoes were at normal background levels of seismicity and deformation during the past week.
Jan 14, 2025 19:40 - Monitored CALIFORNIA VOLCANOESCurrent Volcano Alert Level: all NORMALCurrent Aviation Color Code: all GREENActivity Update: All volcanoes monitored by CalVO show normal background earthquake activity and ground movement. Monitored volcanoes include Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake Volcano, Lassen Volcanic Center, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, Ubehebe Craters, and Salton Buttes.Past Week Observations for January 6 (0000h PST) to January 12 (2359h PST) Typical seismicity was recorded at The Geysers geothermal field south of the ...
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 HVO Ofu-Olosega GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Ofu-Olosega.
Jan 2, 2025 19:45 - No significant activity was detected at Ofu-Olosega Volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano.
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 HVO Ta'u Island GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Taʻū Island
Jan 2, 2025 19:45 - No significant activity was detected at Taʻū Volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano. Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument on Taʻū Island recorded no significant vertical deformation.
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 HVO Tutuila Island GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Tutuila Island
Jan 2, 2025 19:45 - No significant activity was detected at Tutuila Volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano.
January 20th, 2025 20:35:21 EST -0500 HVO Mauna Loa GREEN/NORMAL - No significant changes at Mauna Loa in the past month; slow inflation of the summit continues.
Jan 2, 2025 18:22 - Seismicity beneath Mauna Loa's summit and upper-elevation flanks has been low over the past month; approximately 65 small-magnitude earthquakes (most below M1.5) were detected, which is expected for the post-eruption phase of this volcano and similar to the previous month.Data from Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments on Mauna Loa showed only continued minor inflation near the summit as the volcano recovers from the 2022 eruption and magma replenishes the reservoir system. Gas and temperature data from a station on Mauna Loa's Southwest Rift Zone show that H2S ...
