May 24, 2026 19:10 - Overview:The Halemaʻumaʻu eruption of Kīlauea is paused. Glow was visible from both eruptive vents overnight. Summit reinflation has continued since lava fountaining episode 47 ended on May 15. Forecast models suggest that episode 48 will occur sometime between Monday, May 25 and Tuesday, May 26. No significant activity has been noted along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone.NOTE: Significant changes in activity between Daily Updates are posted here: https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/observatory-messages Summit Observations:Glow was visible from ...
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 AVO Great Sitkin ORANGE/WATCH - Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.
May 23, 2026 18:03 - Small earthquakes associated with lava dome growth and rockfalls were detected in seismic data. Overnight satellite images indicated slightly elevated surface temperatures, consistent with slow lava advance. Webcam images of the volcano were obscured by clouds. The current eruption began in July 2021 and, since then, lava flows have filled most of the summit crater and advanced into valleys below. There have been no explosions at Great Sitkin Volcano since an event in May 2021. The volcano is monitored using local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data, webcams, ...
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 AVO Shishaldin YELLOW/ADVISORY - Ongoing unrest detected with seismic and infrasound events, minor gas emissions.
May 23, 2026 18:03 - Seismic and infrasound sensors continue to detect frequent small events. Steam emissions were visible in clear webcam images, and sulfur dioxide was detected in satellite images drifting east from the volcano. Local seismic and infrasound sensors, web cameras, and a geodetic network are used to monitor Shishaldin Volcano. In addition to the local monitoring network, AVO uses nearby geophysical networks, regional infrasound and lightning data, and satellite images to detect eruptions.
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 AVO Kupreanof YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues with earthquakes detected.
May 23, 2026 18:03 - A few small earthquakes were detected with regional seismic stations over the last day. Satellite images were obscured by clouds. There is no real-time geophysical monitoring network at Mount Kupreanof. The closest functioning seismometers are approximately 17 miles (27 km) to the east of the volcano as part of the Mount Veniaminof network. Mount Kupreanof is also monitored by satellite data, remote infrasound and lightning networks, and visual observations from pilots and mariners passing by the volcano.

May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 HVO Ofu-Olosega GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Ofu-Olosega.
May 7, 2026 20:30 - No significant activity was detected at Ofu-Olosega volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano.
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 HVO Ta'u Island GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Taʻū Island
May 7, 2026 20:30 - No significant activity was detected at Taʻū volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano. A Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument on Taʻū Island recorded no significant deformation. The FAGA broadband seismometer located on eastern Taʻū Island is currently out of service. The TAU broadband seismometer on western Taʻū Island remains operational.
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 HVO Tutuila Island GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Tutuila Island
May 7, 2026 20:30 - No significant activity was detected at Tutuila volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano.
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 HVO Haleakala GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Haleakalā.
May 7, 2026 19:50 - No significant activity was detected at Haleakalā volcano during the past month. HVO seismometers recorded no earthquakes in the vicinity of the volcano. A total of 132 earthquakes were detected beneath Mauna Loa's summit region in the April reporting period, while March had 86 earthquakes. Data from Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments on Mauna Loa show variable rates of inflation at the summit over the past six months. This is associated with refilling of the summit reservoir system following the 2022 eruption.Gas and temperature data ...
May 24th, 2026 15:36:45 EDT -0400 AVO Aniakchak GREEN/NORMAL - Port Heiden Receive Facility repairs have sufficiently restored power, moving monitoring status of Aniakchak Volcano from UNASSIGNED to GREEN/NORMAL

There are now enough reliable data to establish the real-time state of the volcano. Due to this, Aniakchak Volcano is moving from UNASSIGNED to GREEN/NORMAL.Aniakchak Volcano had been at UNASSIGNED since December 23, 2025 due to a lack of data received from Aniakchak seismic stations following a power outage at the Port Heiden Receive Facility. Repairs have since been made to the Port Heiden Receive Facility, sufficiently restoring data flow ...
